This elegant ornately carved console table didn't start out this way. When we purchased it, there was no top! We saw the beauty of the base and had an idea to create a completely custom top. While a new solid wood top was being made, we painted the base in an elegant taupe (French Linen Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan) then applied a wash of a soft gray (Paris Grey Chalk Paint®). We attached the new top, then masked out a border and applied Graphite Chalk Paint® as a stain, then applied black wax to the entire top including the raw wood border. The result is elegant and casual all at the same time.
